generation differences
Follow me on this one: Perhaps in a hypothetical world everyone only married someone their age and had a baby at 25 (average age of first time mothers according to the cdc). The baby gets born and 25 years later finds someone their age and has a baby. If this continues for a while perfectly, Individual generations (25 generations) would be more similar amongst themselves than with any other...

Interaction Design & Industrial Design
Experience Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Product Design; what is the proper way to discriminate those who focus on the interaction of a product & the experience they create from the designers who just make beautiful objects, problem solve, or design user interfaces (on a screen)? The process is definitely different. A lot of interaction/experience design (on a screen or with...

everything one day will be beautiful
All things should be made beautiful, but when something can’t, then at least it shouldn’t distract from the things that are beautiful.

Ideas are like which genitals?
Do you believe design is like sperm, you can always produce more—even if the quality may not always be great? Or do you believe design and ideas are like eggs, where there exists a limited supply. One day we’ll all go through menopause and have no more of an ability to generate ideas

I love design!
Why do I love design? I thought I wanted to create. Creation is an act of love. To love the act of creation means to love the act of love. To be a designer means I love love. I know this now & I want to feel sexy all the time.

white socks
So it came into my attention while in Germany that I was the only one during a party wearing white socks. My initial reaction was that it was european to prefer black socks. Last night in Cincinnati we all took off our shoes and again I was the only one wearing white socks. My grandmother always bought me white socks, I thought they were the standard. I wonder how much an influence the fact my...

Promise vs. Philosophy based
In the book: The Method Method by Eric Ryan, Adam Lowry, Lucas Conley. Promise-based brands vs. philosophy-based brands is discussed. The example they give is this: Promised-based brands = “always low prices” vs. Philosophy-based brands = “help you live better.” I think this is a brilliant and very straight forward theory lesson. From a designer’s perspective this...

What is beautiful is good
Also known as the Halo affect, people who are found physically attractive are assumed to have other favorable qualities. Apply this to design. Why make beautiful products? Users will assume the product has other favorable qualities as well.

beauty in bulk
In societies where food is scare, beauty tends to be associated with bulk (of people). If this is so, do they also have a different view on the proportions of a beautiful object?  Perhaps the thinness of Apple products is not as an appealing trait there.

Thematic Apperception Test TAT
TAT is “a projective test consisitng of a series of ambiguous pictures about which participants are asked to make up a story. Researches then code the stores for motivational themes: Do the stories describe people seeking success or achievement? Power? Affiliation with other people? Intimacy in a close relationship? The motives researchers code from People’s TAT stores are in fact...

Reciprocal Altruism is when you do something at your expense for someone with general expectations that they will act similarly in the future (but not immediately). This happens in nature, it’s in our nature.

Start & End
My flat mate told me she likes to clean on Friday as a sort of ritual to prepare-for and start the weekend. I told her that I had always cleaned on Sundays as a sort of ritual to cleanse and end the week. I guess our habits reflect a bit of our own ideology; what we value. I must say though: I’m switching to Fridays. It just seems more positive.

slow mail
There should be a website, focused on keeping in contact with friends and family that delays emails for periods of time. This would slow down the back & forth between people’s messages. Writing emails takes time. Sending them back and forth makes the connection between to people heavy to carry. It seems nowadays its either, reply immediately or somethings wrong with the relationship....

Highlights on a car
Here’s an idea.  Some gas company (e.g. Chevron) should put fancy lights in their gas station. Design it so that the cars underneath, while filling up gas, could look sparkling with magnificent highlights. I’d at least try it once to see my car at its best. At the very least, it would encourage me to wash my car. Of course you’d only get the effect during the night.

Group thinking
in this world there will be always ‘us’ against ‘them’. Here at Kunsthochschule Weißensee: It struck me a bit odd that my group members here think I’m overly helpful. It didn’t take much time at all to help them, but this contributes to what I’ve been noticing here at this school: the individual is celebrated more than a group. I should say there are no...

aging & comfort
My aunt & uncle are planning on visiting me in Berlin next month. She keeps insisting on finding a Hilton in the city. I keep insisting she try out one of the many interesting non-chain hotels in the city. But in her last email, where she told me she found the perfect hilton in the city, she mentioned that at her age she’s searching for the comfort of familiarity. Then it struck me,...
